Before you enroll
Questions from parents.
Which grades can my student enter?
New students enter mainly in Grade 6 (about 55 to 60 spaces), Grade 7 (10 to 15) and Grade 9 (40 to 45). For 2027-28, Grade 8 is also an entry point with about 5 new students. Other grades, including Grades 10 and 11, accept applications on a Wait Pool basis only, with a $10 Wait Pool application fee.
Do we need the ISEE or SSAT?
Applicants take the ISEE through iseetest.org. Students also considering boarding schools may submit the SSAT instead. Results must be received by January 8, 2027. The school calls the test the only standard measure all applicants share, and says it is only one measure used together with the other required materials.
Is an interview required?
The interview is required. The application is not complete without it. The applicant and at least one parent or guardian attend. Families should allow an hour and a half for the interview and tour, and the tour happens the day of the interview while school is in session.
What does it cost?
Tuition for 2026-27 is $68,700, from the full-day Threes Program through Grade 12. Not in tuition: an Enrollment Fee of $100, Parent Association Dues of $85, an Activity Fee of $125, a Facility Improvement fee of $1,150 for Middle and Upper Division students, a $325 Middle Division book fee, lunch, and some student technology devices. Transportation costs extra, and optional tuition refund insurance is available.
Does Horace Mann offer financial aid?
Admission is need-blind. Applicants are evaluated without regard to a request for financial aid, and aid decisions come with the admission offer. For 2026-27, 17.5% of students receive more than $19,500,000 in financial aid, and awards ranged from $2,000 to $68,700.
Does asking for aid affect admission?
Admission is need-blind. Applicants are evaluated without regard to a request for financial aid, and aid decisions come with the admission offer.
Does the school run buses?
The school does not provide transportation. Families can contract a private bus company where service exists, and the 242nd Street stop of the 1 subway line is one block from campus.
When do families hear back?
The school typically notifies families of admission decisions in February 2027.
Is HoraceMannPrep affiliated with Horace Mann?
No. HoraceMannPrep by EduAvenues is an independent service, not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Horace Mann School. Check every requirement and date on the school's own website before you apply.
