Horace Mann School admissions timeline for fall 2027 entry

Every published date for the Horace Mann application: interview cutoff October 15, application November 18, complete file January 8, decisions in February.

Horace Mann School is a large independent day school in the Riverdale neighborhood of the Bronx. The Middle and Upper Divisions share one campus, and the school says families should begin the process one year before the desired entry date. For Grade 9 entry in fall 2027, the application year is the 2026-27 school year. This guide puts the published dates in the order families meet them.

Who is applying, and for what

Horace Mann lists about 40 to 45 spaces for new students in Grade 9 each year. Grade 6 has about 55 to 60 spaces and Grade 7 has 10 to 15. For 2027-28, Grade 8 is also an entry point, with about 5 new students expected. At other grades, openings depend on attrition and applications are accepted on a Wait Pool basis only.

Every applicant applies to the next grade level. The school says it may suggest that a student repeat a grade if, after reading the application, it believes that placement is more appropriate. Once a child is admitted, the family does not need to reapply from year to year.

The dates, in order

| Step | Date | | --- | --- | | Applications open | August 5, 2026 | | Interviews begin | September 14, 2026 | | Application and interview booking cutoff for online scheduling | October 15, 2026 | | Report cards from two years ago and last year uploaded | October 15, 2026 | | Financial aid materials due | November 15, 2026 | | Application form deadline | November 18, 2026 | | Complete file due | January 8, 2027 | | Decisions | February 2027 |

The two October 15 items matter most because they come first. The school says that applicants who submit or schedule after October 15 cannot book an interview online. It will contact them directly if it can offer an interview later in the season, depending on availability.

What the complete file needs

The application runs through the Ravenna Admissions Portal. The non-refundable application fee is $60, and the school reduces it to $0 for families applying for financial aid. The January 8, 2027 deadline covers most of the rest:

  • Three student essays and a list of up to five activities or interests.
  • ISEE results, or SSAT results for students also considering boarding schools.
  • Two teacher recommendations, plus a form from a school administrator, counselor or dean.
  • A transcript request sent to the current school, with grades from the prior two years and a mid-year report.
  • A parent statement, which the school calls mandatory.
  • The interview. The school says plainly that the application is not complete without it.

An optional graded school essay is also accepted for applicants to Grades 8 to 11. It is not required.

The interview

Both the applicant and at least one parent or guardian attend. The school asks families to allow an hour and a half for the interview and campus tour, and the tour happens on the day of the interview while school is in session. The school also says the specific interviewer a family meets has no bearing on admissions outcomes. Families book through the portal.

Testing

Horace Mann asks for the ISEE, scheduled at iseetest.org. Students who are also considering boarding schools may send the SSAT instead. Results must reach the school by January 8, 2027. The school describes the test as the only standard measure all applicants have in common, and also says it is just one measure used together with records, recommendations and the interview. The pages we reviewed do not give a test date, so check the testing organization for sittings that fit before January 8.

What Horace Mann has not published

On the pages we reviewed, the school does not list an admit rate, the number of applicants for the 40 to 45 Grade 9 spaces, or average ISEE and SSAT scores. It gives the decision month, February 2027, but not a decision day or a reply deadline. Ask the admissions office at admissions@horacemann.org rather than guessing.

Getting to the interview

Plan the trip before interview day, since the applicant and a parent both attend. The school does not run its own buses. It partners with a private bus service for families who want one, and that service is an extra cost. Students who live in New York City may be eligible for a free student OMNY card, and the 1 train stop at 242nd Street is one block from campus. Questions about the process go to admissions@horacemann.org.

How the pieces fit together

The dates above can look like a single pile of deadlines, but they fall into three groups. The first group is the October items, which are about getting into the interview schedule: the application, the interview booking and the report cards. The second is the November pair, which is the application form deadline of November 18 and, for families asking for aid, the aid materials due November 15. The third is the January 8 complete file, which is where the essays, test results, recommendations, transcript and parent statement all have to be in.

Separating them helps because the people involved change. Teachers and the current school's office need lead time for recommendations and transcripts, so those requests belong in the October and November window even though the file is not due until January. The student's own work, the essays and the activities list, can be drafted in between. Families asking for aid also have the Clarity application to finish by November 15. Treat every item as required by its own date.

What to do this week

Open the portal, submit the application and book the interview, since the October 15 cutoff comes first. Then work backward from January 8: book a test sitting, ask two teachers for recommendations, request the transcript, and start the essays and parent statement.
