Horace Mann lists its 2026-27 tuition as $68,700, for a full day from the Threes Program through Grade 12. That is one figure for every grade, but it is not the whole bill. This guide covers what tuition includes, the fees on top of it, and how the aid process works for fall 2027 entry.
What tuition covers
The school says tuition supports faculty salaries and benefits, teaching materials, equipment, technology, maintenance, campus operating expenses, financial aid, and classroom trips and activities.
What is extra
Horace Mann lists these costs outside tuition:
- An Enrollment Fee of $100.
- Parent Association Dues of $85.
- An Activity Fee of $125.
- A Facility Improvement fee of $1,150 for Middle and Upper Division students.
- A $325 Middle Division book fee.
- Lunch and some student technology devices.
- Transportation, which costs extra, and optional tuition refund insurance.
Private music lessons and special trips during breaks, such as language or club travel, also cost extra. Students in Grades 9 to 12 need a functional laptop. The school does not provide transportation; it points families to a private bus company, and students in the five boroughs may be eligible for a free student fare card.
Paying over time
Families can pay in full in February, or choose a plan. The 3 pay plan asks for 20% of tuition in February, 60% plus all fees on June 1, and 20% on December 1. The 10 pay plan asks for 20% in February, then monthly payments of the remaining balance from May 1 to January 1. Required non-tuition fees are due June 1 on any plan. The school also says tuition has risen between 4% and 6% in recent years, and that families who receive aid typically get additional funding for part of the increase.
How financial aid works
- Admission is need-blind. Applicants are evaluated without regard to a request for aid, and aid decisions arrive with the admission offer.
- Apply through Clarity. The online application typically takes less than 30 minutes and is available in Spanish. The submission fee is $65, and the application can be shared with other schools that accept Clarity at no extra charge.
- Deadline. Aid materials are due November 15, 2026. The aid budget is limited, so the school says late applications may not be considered if funding runs out.
- Both parents. Custodial and non-custodial parents and guardians must complete the aid materials. A waiver form exists for an absent parent.
- Renewal. Families apply for aid every year, and aid is not automatic. The school endeavors to continue aid at a similar level if the family situation does not change.
What Horace Mann reports about aid
For 2026-27, the school says 17.5% of students receive more than $19,500,000 in financial aid, with awards ranging from $2,000 to $68,700. Beginning in 2027-28, the Ingenio Non Censio Scholars Program offers full tuition and non-tuition support to families earning less than $150,000 without significant assets.
Reading the numbers
A few figures are easy to misread. The $68,700 tuition is the same top figure the school uses as the upper end of its aid awards, which means its published range of $2,000 to $68,700 runs from a small award to full tuition. The 17.5% figure is the share of all students at the school who receive aid, not the share of applicants who are offered it, and the school does not publish an applicant-level figure. The $19,500,000 total is also spread across the whole student body. Use these as context for how large the aid program is, not as a forecast for any one family.
The annual increase matters for planning too. A school that raises tuition between 4% and 6% in recent years will charge more in each later year of enrollment than it does in 2026-27, and families who receive aid should expect to reapply each year with updated information. Ask the Financial Aid Office how the school treats an increase in a family's aid from one year to the next.
Questions worth asking the school
- Which tax year should we use in Clarity, and when does the application open for fall 2027 entry? The school's pages give different answers.
- If our situation changes after we apply, how do we update the file?
- How do the payment plan dates line up with the date aid decisions arrive?
- Which of the extra fees does our aid award cover, if any?
Small details that save time
The application fee drops to $0 for families applying for aid, and the school gives a waiver code in the portal. The school suggests parents wait to complete aid materials until early October so the information is as current as possible. Its pages are not consistent about the date Clarity opens or the tax year, so confirm both in Clarity before you start.
Plan your own numbers
Gather tax documents early so the aid application takes an evening, not a week. Questions go to the Financial Aid Office at 718-432-4101 or financial_aid@horacemann.org. See the full tuition and aid page, the timeline and the FAQ.
